Image / Drawing as Practice - Self Evaluation
END OF MODULE SELF EVALUATION
BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN
BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN
LEVEL 05
Module Code :OUGD205
Module Title : Image
This module overall has allowed me to explore and improve my skills in image making; improving my application of type and image within a specific context or with meaning and purpose. Before the module I was feeling a bit lost in terms of my design practice and what direction I wanted to go in, but this module has made sense of what (at this moment in time) Graphic design I want to produce and what disciplines I want to concentrate and strengthen; typography, editorial, layout, image and colour. The main element of the module briefs that I enjoyed was the time restrictions, only being allowed a week to produce work alongside other modules meant that I had to work efficiently and manage time to a high level and forced me to make decisions quickly and not waste time worrying about the 'right' decision. With both the editorial brief and the type as image brief I had to work at a high pace and in hind sight thrived under the limitations set in place and the context. My confidence in my work and using my initiative has also improved and I believe that is down to the freedom given in terms of personal style and experimentation with new techniques and processes.
The skills that I picked up in this module also transferred over to my other modules, and I started to see 'Drawing as Practice' as a self-explorative workshop in terms of my practice, where I would try and apply processes that I wasn't able to in the other studio modules such as using the laser cutter for my type as image (faces) poster. When considering research within the module I found that with the limited time given and with other studio modules taking place alongside that research had to be a concentrated body and completely relevant and idea dictated. Which in reality is what research should be, but within this module became a stripped back no thrills kind of research which I think helped my to make decisions quicker and more efficient.
The biggest weakness in this module turned out to be the final brief, where we were give more freedom and time to produce the final outcome. I found that because I was allowed more time to work I didn't work as productive and spent too much time thinking about what I was going to do and changing my mind where if I had been more restrictive with my self and applied more personal goals and deadlines like the previous briefs I feel I would of produced a much more impressive product that what I did.

Image: Self initiated brief
With this brief I want to combine my preferred briefs from the module and play to my strengths; type and image. I also want to concentrate on the editorial side and how image is used, so I've decided to design a magazine based around maxims and producing images to partner them.
Brief: You have been given a selection of maxims by Daniel Desbiens, which you must produce an image to accompany. The image (s) will partner the maxims in a specially designed publication to showcase the designs and must relate directly to the maxim (s).
Background: An image rarely exists out of context. What an image is in response to or the environment it is placed in (or a combination of the two) will define the context.
This is clear within editorial illustration/photography/print making etc…you are responding directly to a body of given text and it will sit within a publication (its environment).

Considerations: THINK VISUALLY. Consider what the visual essence of your subject matter (the maxim) and how best to communicate this. What are the obvious responses? How can you move beyond these? How subtle can you be? Do your ideas operate as a set, series or sequence?
Practical Considerations: There are no media restrictions. You can work photographically, across three dimensions, collage, incorporate print making methods or combine all of these processes…however you will must be able to record these into a 2d format so that they can be used with the publication.

Mandatory: All images should be supported by a broad range of visual investigation in the form of design sheets and notebooks.
Deliverables: A publication showcasing the maxims and related images.
